I am happy to report that enthusiastic reviews for “The Tom Tyler Silent Film Collection” DVD/Blu-Ray from Undercrank Productions keep coming, in many cases combined with reviews of Ben Model’s latest book “The Silent Film Universe” which has just hit the streets. This book is a must read for anyone interested in silent film, and since it coincides with the release of the Tom Tyler DVD/Blu-Ray, is sure to help the viewer of the newly restored “The Man from Nevada” and “Law of the Plains”, both originally released in 1929, to understand and appreciate these silent films even more. “The Silent Film Universe” can be purchased here from Amazon.

And now, for the reviews! Our most recent ones are as follows:

The Tom Tyler Silent Film Collection ready for pre-ordering

The day has finally come! The Tom Tyler Silent Film Collection containing two newly 2K restorations of “The Man from Nevada” and “Law of the Plains”, both released in 1929, are finally available for pre-ordering! The Kickstarter for this Tom Tyler project was hugely successful for Tom Tyler fans across the genres of silent film, western, and serial fans, with a good dose of the Universal horror fans who recognize Tom as the frightening, glowing-eyed mummy from “The Mummy’s Hand” (1940). Silent film restoration to the final product of DVD and Blu-ray are a lot of work, but as with everything else that comes with Tom Tyler, he is definitely worth it.

You can pre-order your DVD or Blu-ray copy from any of the links below:

What’s next now that the Tom Tyler Kickstarter met its goal?

First of all, I want to thank everyone who made the Kickstarter a huge success – to the backers, Ben Model, and to everyone who helped spread the word about the Tom Tyler Silent Film Collection Kickstarter.

As of today, Friday, May 24, 2024, there are still nine days left to go with the Kickstarter, so if you would like to be among the first to receive a Blu-ray of “The Man from Nevada” and “Law of the Plains”, both from 1929, you have time to make a pledge until June 2, 2024, 5:54 PM Eastern Time.

Backers of this Kickstarter will receive regular updates on the progress of the project directly through the Kickstarter site. As stated in the Kickstarter pitch, December 2024 is the expected date for the completion of the Blu-ray. This project is certainly timely enough, for it marks Tom Tyler’s 100-year anniversary since he started appearing in bit roles in Hollywood, such as Elinor Glyn’s “Three Weeks” (1924).

Finally, Tom Tyler fan G. Michael Dobbs is in the process of writing a book about Tom. Unlike the 2005 biography written by Mike Chapman, the new book will be about Tom’s unique film career as a leading man in B-westerns from the silent film era through the 1930’s, plus his supporting roles in A-films like “The Talk of the Town” (1942) and of course “Stagecoach” (1939).

The Kickstarter link is here for those who would still like to make a pledge:

Tom Tyler on “The Man from Nevada”

As one of Tom Tyler's later silent films – that is, one he made for Syndicate in 1929 and directed by J. P. McGowan, “The Man from Nevada” contains a good dose of what Tom likes to call human interest in the story line which also has several children in the cast.

“I always like to put human interest stuff in my pictures and in 'The Man from Nevada', we have every element that goes to make an entertainment and successful picture, for we have action, scenic beauty, love interest, and human interest as well,” Tom quoted for a press release on the film in The News Chronicle, Shippensburg, PA, January 24, 1930. Some of that interest in includes a baby in the story, and considering the type of onscreen chemistry Tom has had with children in his FBO films, namely, Frankie Darro, that common element would continue to extend into his early talkies such as “Two Fisted Justice” (1931) and “A Rider of the Plains” (1931). It seemed only natural for Tom, for he was just a big boy himself in the western films he made, possessing that kind of rapport with children.

More will be written about “The Man from Nevada” in this blog later on – yes, there is a special significance to this particular silent film.
